Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. In relation to food and cosmetic products, Halal means products that are allowed to be consumed or used by humans according to Shariah (Islamic Law).

The Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) is the Authority responsible for implementation of regulation controlling Halal products in the U.A.E. The Federal Government has recently launched the Halal National Mark to augment the program certifying Halal products and animal slaughterhouses.

GulfTIC is a Halal Certification Body registered and approved by the government of UAE, and the GCC Accreditation Center to offer conformity assessment services and certification of Halal food and cosmetic products intended for the GCC member countries. GulfTIC, as an official third party of ESMA, also offers Halal certification services for animal slaughterhouses, food service establishments and catering services.

The Halal National Mark

  • Mark of Conformity granted to products including food, cosmetic and animal slaughterhouses that have demonstrated compliance with requirements of U.A.E. Regulations for Halal Products.
  • Mark that can be printed on the certified product as a proof of compliance and approval by the Federal Government through ESMA.
  • License to use the Halal National Mark is valid for 3 years.

Certification Process

The certification process is comprehensive, covering evaluation of both products and factory; the whole process takes 8 weeks, involving the following steps

Apply for Service

  • By Product Category.
  • Select as an applicant or submit application.
  • Send required documents.
    • Declaration of Conformity.
    • Table of ingredients list.
    • Table of finished/raw materials.
    • Copy of Halal certificate of ingredients/raw materials or copy of product specification.
    • Manufacturing process flowchart and production procedure.
    • Label artworks.
    • Test reports.
    • Proof of effective implementation of FSMS/ GMP/ GHP or QMS.

  • Application Fee.
  • Document Review Fee.
  • Initial Audit Fee.
  • Fee for the License to Use the Halal National Mark.
  • Certificate Fee.

Conformity Assessment

Document Review
Technical experts review all the documents submitted in order to assess completeness and compliance of the product with the requirements as stated in the U.A.E. Regulation and applicable standards listed below:

Factory Audit
Auditors visit the factory for initial assessment in order to ensure effective implementation of FSMS/ GMP/ GHP or QMS and continuous compliance of product with the requirements.

Product Testing

Auditors shall collect samples during the audit and subject to independent laboratory testing.

Corrective Action

Applicant will be notified of any findings that need immediate corrective action.

Issuance of Certificate

A Certificate of Conformity and License to Use Halal National Mark will be issued to the supplier of product that has complied with the requirements.
